Do I have to have X-rays to undergo chiropractic treatment?

All patients are treated differently.  X-rays are not always required depending on the treatment or other diagnostic tests can be required.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is a quick, painless test that produces images of the structures inside your body — particularly your bones.  X-ray beams can pass through your body, but they are absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of the material they pass through. Dense materials, such as bone and metal, show up as white on X-rays. The air in your lungs shows up as black. Fat and muscle look like varying shades of gray.

For some types of X-ray tests, contrast medium — such as iodine or barium — is introduced into your body to provide greater detail on the X-ray images. Some people experience side effects from contrast material. X-ray beams also expose you to small doses of radiation, but the benefits from these tests far outweigh the risks.

When should I use heat or ice?

Typically ice is used in the first 72 hours following an acute injury to reduce inflammation (swelling).  If the injury is strictly muscular in nature low level heat can be applied.

Who benefits from massage?

Quite literally everyone! But the most common conditions are:
·      Back pain
·      Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and tendinitis
·      Stress relief and stress-related conditions
·      Headaches and migraines
·      Muscle and related conditions such as spasms, strains and sprains
·      Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
·      Circulatory and respiratory problems
·      Post-injury and post surgical rehabilitation

What is massage?

Massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues.  It relieves muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps clear lactic acid and other waste, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints. Massage therapists use long, smooth strokes, kneading and other movements focused on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion.

Can chiropractic help allergies?

Chiropractic manipulation frees up the stress on the body allowing it to function better, thus allowing the body to fight the allergies naturally.

What are allergies?

An allergy is an abnormal reaction by a person's immune system against a normally harmless substance. A person without allergies would have no reaction to this substance, but when a person who is allergic encounters the trigger, the body reacts by releasing chemicals which cause allergy symptoms

I was recently involved in a car crash, can chiropractic help?

Chiropractors are joint specialists, which is the best way to treat joint injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents.  Dr. Remmel has been documenting and treating accident victims for 30 years.

What is an MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.  MR imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be examined on a computer monitor, transmitted electronically, printed or copied to a CD. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays).

What is a spinal disc?

The spinal disc is a soft cushion that sits between each vertabrae of the spine. This spinal disc becomes more rigid with age. In a young individual, the disc is soft and elastic, but like so many other structures in the body, the disc gradually looses its elasticity and is more vulnerable to injury. In fact, even in individuals as young as 30, MRIs show evidence of disc deterioration in about 30% of people.

What is a disc buldge?

A 'disc bulge' is a word used to describe findings seen on a MRI study of the spinal discs. The spinal discs are soft cushions that rest between the bones of the spine, the vertebrae. When a disc is damaged, it may herniate, or push out, against the spinal cord and spinal nerves.

What is a herniated disc?

Many patients with back pain, leg pain, or weakness of the lower extremity muscles are diagnosed with a herniated disc. When a disc herniation occurs, the cushion that sits between the spinal vertebra is pushed outside its normal position. A herniated disc would not be a problem if it weren't for the spinal nerves that are very close to the edge of these spinal discs.

What is a slipped disc?

It is a non-medical term used by lay people to describe a disc injury.  Disc injuries come in many varieties from the milder disc bulge to a disc prolapsed (aka: disc rupture).  As a joint specialist, a doctor of chiropractic is best choice to determine the extent of the disc injury or whether further diagnostics are needed.

What is a pinched nerve?

A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This pressure disrupts the nerve's function, causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness.  A pinched nerve can occur anywhere in your body.

Where do headaches come from?

There are several potential causes of headaches, ranging from eye strain to TMJ syndrome, stress, dietary considerations to a “pinched nerve” in the neck.

How does foot body detoxification work?

The person having detoxification performed places their bare feet into a tub with tap water and a small amount of sea salt.  An array is placed into the water changing the polarity around the feet thus drawing out any toxins.

What is sciatica?

Sciatic neuritis (sciatica) is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve commonly caused by a pinched nerve in the lower back or bulging disc.
